Economic Solutions
Economic solutions to environmental and social problems have been under development for many years, but have really only flourished in the past decade under the guise of the ‘ecological economy’. As the field has matured, policy makers have acted to privatize the parts of ecological systems that are responsible for supporting economic productivity. This is achieved by establishing bottom line regulations that protect health and welfare, then by rewarding companies and other institutions for doing more than is required under the law. Incentive based environmental policies (exemplified by the Kyoto Protocol) have lead to the formation of new markets for credits, certificates, and other forms of commercial paper that can be earned via proactive restoration of environmental health and ecological integrity. This explains the origin of emissions trading under the Kyoto Protocol.
